The Sony World Photography Awards 2027 Single Image Competition invites photographers worldwide to submit their strongest standalone photographs for international recognition, Sony Digital Imaging equipment and a $5,000 overall cash prize. About the Sony World Photography Awards 2027 Single Image Competition

The Single Image competition is part of the 2027 Sony World Photography Awards and was previously known as the Open competition. It celebrates photographs that communicate a powerful idea, moment or story through one standalone image rather than a multi-image project.

The competition is promoted and administered by World Photography Organisation, operated by Creo Arts Group Limited in the United Kingdom. Sony is the title partner of the Awards but is not listed as the legal promoter in the detailed rules.

Entries opened on June 1, 2026. The detailed competition rules require entries to be received by January 5, 2027 at 1:00 p.m. GMT. Other areas of the official website display 4:00 p.m. GMT, so photographers should follow the earlier rules-based time and submit well before the final day.

What Can You Win?

The overall Single Image Competition Winner receives a $5,000 USD cash prize, Sony Digital Imaging equipment, a trophy, a certificate and flights and accommodation connected with the awards ceremony in London.

The organizer does not disclose the exact camera or equipment model, its retail value, the airline, travel class, hotel or number of accommodation nights. Prize details therefore remain subject to the official fulfillment arrangements communicated to the winner.

Who Can Enter?

Entrants should still confirm that participating in an international skill-based competition and receiving the offered prizes is lawful in their own jurisdiction.

There is no general minimum age in the Single Image rules. Entrants under 16 must obtain permission from a parent or legal guardian. If an under-16 entrant wins, a signed consent form must be returned within seven clear days or another winner may be selected.

How to Enter

Create or access a World Photography Organisation account through the official competition page. Choose a category, upload the photograph and complete the required title, description and entry information.

Each entrant may submit up to three images for free. The images may be placed in one category or distributed across several categories. Photographers who want to submit additional images may purchase optional bundles through their account, but buying a bundle is not required for a valid entry.

Photo and File Requirements

Each image must have been taken during 2026. The initial entry file must be a JPEG using the sRGB colour model, with a file size between 1MB and 5MB.

Shortlisted entrants must later be able to provide a high-resolution file of at least 5MB and 300ppi. A photographer who cannot provide that file may be disqualified.

Images must not display the photographer’s name, watermark, copyright notice or screen credits because judging is intended to be anonymous.

Editing and AI-Generated Content

Digital manipulation is permitted, but entrants must disclose how the image was altered. The organizer may request the original photograph and source file to verify the entry.

The submitted work must originate from an analogue or digital photograph. Computer-generated content cannot be the original source of the entry. This means a completely AI-generated image is not eligible even when it visually resembles a photograph.

Copyright and Model Permissions

The entrant must be the sole owner and author of every submitted image. The image must not violate another person’s copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity or contractual rights.

Permission must be obtained from people who are recognizably depicted and from the owners of protected costumes, props or other materials used in the photograph. Entries featuring celebrities, commercial branding or copyrighted materials may be rejected when the necessary rights are not held.

Photographers retain copyright ownership. By entering, however, they grant the World Photography Organisation and its event partners a non-exclusive promotional licence connected with the photographer, competition and exhibitions for the period described in the rules.

Wildlife and Drone Restrictions

Animal welfare requirements apply to all relevant categories. Photographers must not deliberately disturb, provoke, bait or distress animals to create an image. The rules specifically identify live baiting, tape lures and flash photography of nocturnal birds as unacceptable examples.

Drone use must comply with the laws, flight restrictions and permission requirements of the country where the image was taken. Proof of permission may be requested.

Judging Schedule

Eligible entries are scheduled to be judged between January 6 and January 31, 2027. Judges evaluate individual photographs based on factors such as composition, creativity, clarity and suitability for the chosen category.

This is a judged skill competition rather than a random sweepstakes. No numerical odds are published. The practical likelihood of selection depends on the number, quality and eligibility of the photographs received.

Up to 15 photographers may be shortlisted in each category. Category winners and shortlisted entrants are expected to be announced before April 2027, while the overall winner is scheduled to be announced in April.

Winner Notification and Verification

Shortlisted photographers and winners will be contacted by email. Participants should maintain access to the email address associated with their account and monitor spam or filtered-message folders.

A shortlisted entrant may be required to provide the original or high-resolution image, confirm identity, prove ownership, document editing methods and supply any required permissions. Failure to respond by the deadline in the organizer’s correspondence may result in disqualification and replacement.

London Ceremony and Travel Conditions

The overall winner receives flights and accommodation connected with the London awards ceremony. The ceremony is described as a black-tie event, and the winner is expected to be announced online and at the event.

The entrant is responsible for obtaining and paying for any required passport, United Kingdom Electronic Travel Authorisation, Standard Visitor visa or other entry documentation. The promoter does not cover visa or entry-form application costs.

Taxes and Prize Restrictions

Prize recipients are responsible for income taxes or similar obligations imposed under the laws of their country. The rules do not provide tax reimbursement.

There is no cash alternative for non-cash prizes. Winners cannot request the stated value of the Sony equipment or travel benefits instead of receiving the offered components.
